Foods that cause inflammation

For all those out there suffering from inflammatory diseases like rheumatism, fibromyalgia, Crohn’s disease and arthritis, foods that are inflammation-free is the focus. We’ve listed down some foods that are a strict no-no if you’re hunting for anti-inflammatory measures.

Foods that cause inflammationEvery health fanatic out there probably knows how the food that we eat has a great impact on our health. With the increase in different health conditions affecting the general population today, a focus on healthy diet has become even more essential.

Alcohol

Red wine and beer may have certain health benefits to offer, but they’re real bad when it comes to inflammatory conditions. It is believed that consumption of alcoholic drinks can trigger inflammatory responses from head to toe, and individuals who consumed these drinks regularly were found to have a much higher level of inflammation in their stomach, liver and larynx than others.

If you are a heavy drinker, it’s probably time to take it slow and slowly cut down on your consumption per day.

Meat

Here we’re talking about the processed variety, cured and processed meats have high levels of inflammation-causing substances, which trigger an inflammatory response in the body (which usually happens when the body detects the presence of a foreign or harmful object).

Switch to healthier meats like unprocessed, lean meats (chicken, turkey) and seafood.

Corn

Yes, you read that right. This cheap crop which has its way of getting into our daily meals may not be so good after all. Most of the corn that we consume is genetically modified, the consumption of which is strongly linked to stomach inflammation.

Choose other snacking options and stay away from foods that have corn oil or high fructose corn syrup on their label.

Wheat

Here’s another shocker. Wheat is highly inflammatory and acid forming and to top it all, wheat is now genetically modified, the long term effects of which are unknown.

Stick to organic wheat sources if you must, and don’t get tempted into buying ready-made packaged foods that have ‘whole wheat’ or similar stuff printed on their packaging.

Food additives

This one’s a no-brainer. The harmful effects of food additives, preservatives, color enhancers, stabilisers and hormones are many, and triggering an inflammatory response in the body is just another to add. Steer clear of products that are highly processed. Turn to using organic foods and fresh raw fruits and vegetables.
